After United scouts kept tabs on the Colombian last season, Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson has made the 20 year old prospect his number one target in this transfer window.
United hit a stumbling block last week after it was revealed that Rodriguez agreed to a £40 million buy-out clause being included in the five-year contract that he signed last summer, and Porto are determined to hold out for the full amount.
The Reds have been strongly linked with Rodriguez, who can play on either flank or as a striker, ever since doubts were raised about Nani’s new contract, however it is understood that Fergie wants to bring him to Old Trafford even if Nani decides to stay.
Suggestions have been made over a cash-plus-player deal, with claims that midfielder Anderson could be used as a bargaining tool in the deal. Either way it appears that United may have to smash their own transfer record to land the coveted forward.
