A reboot for the series sounds surprising to some, especially since it would not be made by Naughty Dog. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End seemed like a fitting end for the series, giving Nathan Drake some much-needed closure and a happy ending. A reboot for the series would imply that either Nathan Drake would step out of his retirement for another adventure or the series would restart from the beginning. Both of these options seem out of place, as the series’ last mainline entry was only six years ago. However, the latest leaks and rumors suggest that the Uncharted series could be going in a different direction.

Explaining The Uncharted Reboot Leaks
The leak for the Uncharted reboot was reported by Insider Gaming and suggested that the series has been greenlit for a reboot, though it has been handed over to an unknown developer with some assistance from Naughty Dog. It’s worth pointing out that it is not mentioned anywhere that a new game in the Uncharted series would be referred to as a fifth mainline entry. The source of the leak, fittingly named The Leak, is generally credible - though this particular rumor has not been corroborated by any other sources. Despite this, rumors about a reboot for the Uncharted series have been floating around for a while. While there will always be rumors about upcoming games, but this leak comes with more credibility than most other rumors.
However, something that directly conflicts with these rumors is the supposed developer. It has been stated several times in interviews around the launch of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End that it would be a fitting end for the series. Naughty Dog lead designer, Robert Cogburn said in a 2015 interview with Kotaku that it would be a challenge to expand the universe of Uncharted and a new game would have to answer a new question that the previous entries have not addressed. Of course, this was several years ago and the general thoughts about a new Uncharted game must have changed for a reboot to even be considered. It could be why Naughty Dog would only be helping with the entry and not acting as the lead developer.
What some people are theorizing about an Uncharted reboot is that the game would not have the player control Nathan Drake at all. A likely candidate for the series’ new protagonist could be Nathan Drake’s daughter Cassie. She expressed interest in her father’s adventures at the end of Uncharted 4, so it would not be out of the question for her to go on her own adventures in the future. Sony has tried this kind of reboot before, with an example being the God of War reboot. While Kratos might have still been the playable character, it largely focussed on the relationship between a parent and their child. Passing the torch from one generation to the next is a proven way to softly reboot a series while still paying respect to the original, which is something that Uncharted could try.
Gaming leaks and rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt, as there always seems to be speculation floating around and only a handful of rumors ever turn out to be true. The rumors for the Uncharted reboot do have more credibility than most leaks, though nothing is confirmed yet. For a reboot to happen for the Uncharted series, it would have to do something different in order for people to care. A reboot for the sake of keeping a franchise relevant won’t go over well with fans of the series, so something to give the Uncharted series the respect it deserves must be done.
An Uncharted reboot is rumored to be in development.
