Those fans who have played Plunder in both Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3—easily two of the top games of the last generation—ought to be somewhat familiar with what Plunder involves, as it’s essentially a multiplayer version of Capture the Flag with a statue or idol taking the place of the flag. However, as seen in the trailer and as described by Uncharted 4’s lead game designer Robert Cogburn below, a few changes have been made to Plunder to make it more conducive the way the game’s multiplayer has been designed, as Cogburn writes:
“For those familiar with the classic Plunder game type, we’ve made a few updates. In previous Uncharted games, people carrying the idol could not traverse with it; we removed this constraint. Also, Plunder has been a five-on-five experience in the past; we changed that to four vs. four.”

Interestingly enough, fans attending PAX East this weekend will be among the first of the public to try out Uncharted 4’s Plunder mode, with the game’s multiplayer being available in the PlayStation booth for the duration of the event. Those who can’t attend this year’s PAX East shouldn’t fret, though, because Plunder will also be playable across three different maps in the upcoming Uncharted 4 multiplayer open beta. The areas in which the mode will be accessible are Island, Rooftops, and Madagascar City.
With Uncharted 4’s release date being a little over two weeks away, fans of the franchise are surely anxiously anticipating the game’s arrival. Although developers have said that the title’s ending will be divisive, many long-time fans will likely walk away with a sense of contentment at having spent time with such a special series, regardless of its conclusion.
What do you think about the return of Plunder to Uncharted 4? Are there any other game modes from other titles you would like to see brought back for the last game in the series made by Naughty Dog? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
