These factors aside, the reason there never has been single player DLC for an Uncharted game is because Naughty Dog could spend all of that effort on their next game. According to game director Justin Richmond, the team is just too small to be split up and put to work on singleplayer DLC, they would rather focus all of that effort on crafting there next game.
Uncharted 3 will of course be receiving multiplayer add-ons just as its predecessor, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves did. While this will certainly disappoint some fans, one must realize that it isn’t as difficult to craft a handful of multiplayer maps and some skins as it is to make a whole new levels and stories. One has to factor the time needed to build the levels, test everything out, bring the voice actors, etc.
Naughty Dog’s community strategist Arne Meyer also chimed in, saying that “dialing back our ambition is difficult”. After what we’ve seen from Uncharted 3, it’s hard to disagree with Arne on that one. That and this means they’re delivering a complete package and not intentionally leaving out content like we’re seeing a lot of triple-A games doing these days…
Looking at past titles, Naughty Dog also has a relatively small turn around time for new games. Uncharted 2 only took 18 months to develop, factoring in that there are only about ninety people working at Naughty Dog, having them work on single player DLC could end up meaning that there would be a larger gap between new games.
Uncharted 3 might not be getting any additional single player content, but judging by Naughty Dog’s track record, fans will have more than enough content to enjoy when the game launches later this year, including a fully fledged campaign, robust multiplayer, co-op and a code for the Starhawk beta.
Uncharted 3 releases November 1st, 2011 for the PS3.
