Davis is on the cusp of claiming a Final Four victory in just his first season leading the Tar Heels as their head coach. His is no small part in the Tar Heels’ Final Four history, which is arguably greater than any in college basketball: He was a part of one as a player, two as an assistant and, now, one as a head coach.
DECOURCY: Duke-UNC in Final Four? Perfect rivalry, perfect occasion, but don’t expect a perfect game
His previous appearances on the Final Four stage came with the two biggest coaches associated with the program: Dean Smith and Roy Williams, whom he succeeded as head coach. Those two make up the majority of Carolina’s Final Four berths, but are by no means comprehensive.
With that, The Sporting News breaks down the illustrious Final Four history, from Davis all the way back to the Tar Heels’ first entrant in 1946:
How many Final Fours has UNC been to?
North Carolina has been to 21 men’s Final Fours, more than any other program and three more than second-place UCLA (18). The Tar Heels coaches to have reached that stage include, in chronological order: Ben Carnevale (one); Frank McGuire (one); Dean Smith (11); Bill Guthridge (two); Roy Williams (five); and Davis (one).

How many times has UNC won a national championship?
North Carolina has won six national championships, with victories in 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009 and 2017. To date, McGuire, Smith and Williams are the only national title-winning coaches in North Carolina history.
UNC record in Final Four games
UNC is 12-9 (.550) in Final Four games to date. The majority of those losses came under Smith, who despite making the Final Four 11 times had a losing record on the stage: 5-6. He went 1-3 to start in the Final Four, won three straight, then went 1-3 to finish his career (he retired following a loss to surging Arizona in the 1997 Final Four).
Carnevale and McGuire each went 1-0 in the Final Four; Guthridge went 0-2.
Williams is second among UNC coaches with four Final Four victories, only losing in 2008 to Kansas (which went onto beat Memphis in the national championship game that season). The Tar Heels are coming off three four victories in the Final Four, including in their last appearance: 81-77 over Duke.

UNC record in national championship
UNC is 6-5 (.545) in the national championship game. That includes an 0-1 record under Carnevale; a 1-0 record under McGuire; and a 2-3 record under Smith.
Here, Williams has a clear distinction over each of his predecessors, claiming a sterling 3-1 record in the NCAA Tournament championship game. He has victories in 2005, 2009 and 2017, with his only loss coming in 2016 via buzzer-beater from Villanova — considered among the greatest moments in March Madness history.
Regardless, Williams has the most national championships of any coach in UNC history, and a higher winning percentage (.750) than Smith. Only McGuire, who won the only national championship he was a part of, has a better win percentage (1.000).
